HOW WE HELP: Philosophy

We Are Passionate About Whole Foods And Healthy Living
While the “standard American diet” consists of salty, sugared, caffeinated, fast-food, packaged, processed, artificial, chemicalized, refined, junk foods, too much meat, dairy, quick fix “diets”, denial and deprivation, we promote eating natural whole foods, learning to eat mindfully and intuitively, and living a healthy lifestyle.

Genes play a risk in certain health problems, but healthy nutrition and lifestyle changes can often halt or reverse disease. Eating well is among the cornerstones of health and should be an overall healthy lifestyle, which also includes regular exercise, stress management, minimizing negative lifestyle habits and exposure to environmental hazards. We believe a diet consisting predominantly of whole foods will give your body the nutrients it needs to promote health.

Our experience working with clients shows us that healthful eating, in conjunction with mindful and intuitive eating, and regular exercise, can allow your body to naturally achieve your ideal weight without dieting, deprivation, denial, keeping track of points, servings, meal plans, for some other externally imposed way of eating.

Food is the fuel for our body and affects how we think and feel. Eating well involves a balance of healthy carbohydrates, fats and proteins, a variety of nutrients and minerals and moderation. Eating just one nutritious meal can put you on the path to health and begin to help you curb cravings. Organic food may be less environmentally toxic, more nutritious, and taste better, than conventional food. Local farm foods provide more nutrients and are less environmentally toxic than food from afar. In addition, buying locally supports the local economy. Whole food can be satisfying, delicious and simple to prepare. Living a healthy lifestyle can be fun. We can meet you where you are, educate you, help you transition to eating healthy whole foods, and integrate eating well and healthy living into your life, in the way that makes sense to you.

Garbage In. Garbage Out.
There’s an IT expression to describe how good you can expect your outcome to be. It’s “garbage in, garbage out”, meaning if you feed your computer bad information, you’ll get bad results. The same can be said about the fuel we give our body and the way our machine functions. If what we eat gets absorbed into our blood and becomes the nutrition for our cells, tissues and organs, affecting the way our body functions and our mind thinks, then "you are what you eat" applies. We are what we eat, and if we put non-healthful food in, then how well can we expect our body to work?

Change Takes Time
Your habits have been with you for a while, so it's not realistic to expect to see change overnight. Diet and lifestyle change take time to implement, impact the body, and be part of your regular routine. Be patient, stay on the path and you will achieve your goals, a deep knowledge of yourself & confidence in your abilities. Be compassionate with yourself. Healthy living is not a static state, but with daily practice you'll build muscle memory. When you "fall off", you'll gently and consciously get yourself "back on", and develop a deeper relationship with yourself, physically and emotionally.

Healthy Living Is Self-Perpetuating And Contagious
There is no end to wellness, as our bodies and lives are constantly changing. Get on the path, take action to create a healthy life and you'll find yourself seduced by how good you feel, physically and emotionally. Over time, you may find yourself doing things to take care of yourself that you had never thought you'd do. And you may inspire others to do the same.

Diets Don't Work!
Diets are emotionally exhausting, physically draining and wreak havoc on your body and self-esteem. Diets offer a "quick-fix" meant for a period of time, involving food restrictions and limitations, denial, deprivation and generally, unhealthful, unnatural food, an unhealthful way of eating, and the promise (or perhaps illusion) of being able to return to your eating habits before you got onto the thing. However, common sense says that when one goes back to old habits, the weight will return. Diets are rigid and frequently result in "food obsession". Whatever it is that is not "allowed" on the diet, seems to be the thing you can't stop thinking about.

Diet quick fixes do nothing to help you achieve lifelong health and happiness, nor do they encourage the body's natural inclination toward balance and health. When health and wellness improve, other areas of your life such as relationships, career and creativity also improve. You will naturally begin to crave the foods and activities that make you feel better, feel more motivated to make time in your life for those things that are truly important to you and find yourself lovin' the foods that love you back… Getting off the diet roller coaster (aka "yo-yo dieting"), and making healthy nutrition and lifestyle changes is a much healthier and productive way of achieving better health and your ideal weight.

There Is No “Perfect” Way To Eat That Works For Everyone
Each individual has unique needs based on individual lifestyle, ancestry, foods you grew up on, metabolism, health and personal preferences. The dynamic and changing nature of the body requires a flexible and changing diet. Each client's individual needs are taken into account to create a foundation built on whole natural foods and their healing properties, and habits that work for that person.

Our Bodies Are Intelligent And Tell Us What We Need
The body has a natural inclination toward balance, but most people are so blinded by the stress and distractions of their daily lives that they miss the messages their bodies give them, often becoming aware of their bodies and its needs only when it cries for help become too loud to ignore. Clients are encouraged to slow down and listen to their bodies to become mindful of how they are feeling. Guided visualizations, relaxation exercises, meditation, breath work techniques, yoga and other creative exercises will ground and connect you to your body's wisdom, and through the introduction of new and healthful foods and activities, gently and slowly, rather than focusing on the modification of negative foods/behaviors, you will learn to make positive healthy adjustments to the way you take care of yourself. These healthful habits have a natural tendency to take hold, crowd and ease out the less healthful ones, and you will naturally begin to crave those foods and activities that make you feel better and more balanced.

Nourishment Is Not Limited To Food Alone
Good health includes two kinds of food: primary food (laughter, physical activity, meditation, time outdoors, healthy relationships, satisfying career choices) as well as secondary food (what’s on the plate). Nourishing yourself fully involves understanding that your body's metabolic processes are profoundly influenced by emotional state, genetics, cultural and family heritage, nutrients, environment and relationships and exercise habits. Attention is given to the whole person and what will bring them a fully satisfying life that is balanced and joyful.

The Most Important Relationship You Have In Your Life Is With Yourself
After all, no one else can take care of you, nor be responsible for your health and happiness in the way that you can be for yourself. The way you take care of yourself affects your self-esteem, the way you relate to everyone and everything in your life, and, the way everyone and everything relates back to you. And, although this may initially seem contradictory, when you take care of yourself, you actually become more available to other people and other things in your life because you've put your proverbial oxygen mask on.

Categorical Thinking
You aren't "good" because you ate one thing, and "bad" because you ate another. You won't go to jail if you eat cookies and you won't get special treatment at the post office during holiday time if you eat celery sticks. In the same vein, one food is not "bad" and other "good". It is more accurate and empowering to consider the choice of eating one thing over another as healthful or unhealthful, rather than to categorize yourself, or the food, as "good" or "bad".

The Messages In Your Mind
Have you ever thought "I'll never lose weight", "I can't stick to anything" or "I'm just too busy to take care of myself"? Just because you have a thought running through your head doesn't mean it's the truth, although your mind believes it! Your mind will believe anything you tell it. You might not even be conscious of what you are saying or thinking, but your thoughts are powerful and become limiting beliefs– limiting you from taking steps to move forward and live the life you truly desire. Our coaching can help you identify these messages and change them by creating new, healthful, positive and motivating messages that will serve you better.

"Feel-Good Self-Care" Is Key
What nice thing have you done for yourself today? When one takes pleasure in nourishing themselves with self-care, they increase the value they hold of themselves, become motivated to continue feeling this way, and become attracted to healthy balanced living, finding it fun, practical, pleasurable, in sync with, and supportive of, their values. They then naturally integrate healthy balanced living into their lifestyle, which ultimately affects all areas of their life in a positive way.
